Where can I find facts and information about Ancient Greece?

Introduction

Ancient Greece was one of the most advanced Civilisations of the ancient world. It was made up of city-states which were regions of Greece protected by a main city. Ancient Greeks invented philosophy, literature, science, mathematics, the study of history, theatre, the Olympic Games and democracy. They also introduced the alphabet to Europe. The Greeks referred to themselves as Hellenes and their land as Hellas. This entry gives you a list of websites and books related to Ancient Greece.

General websites

Here are some great websites to help you learn about Ancient Greece and the people who lived there.

Britannica School

This is one of the EPIC resources. EPIC is a collection of reliable databases that have some really good information on all sorts of topics including Ancient Greece.

Tips: To get to the EPIC resources you will need a password from your school librarian first. Or you can chat with one of our AnyQuestions librarians between 1 and 6pm Monday to Friday and they will help you online. Some EPIC databases may also be available through your public library.

Topic Explorer

Topic Explorer is an online tool from the National Library of New Zealand. It contains a wide range of quality resources for students in a range of formats, (eg articles, books, images, videos, primary sources, sets, and websites) on a variety of topics. These resources have been selected from reliable national and international sources.

There are two ways to search this site:

  • Select the Filter by topic, type, or learning area button and enter the keywords 'Ancient Greeks'.

  • Look through the topics on the homepage and find Ancient Greeks.

Tips: We like sites like this because they’re reliable. You can tell because of their web address – they have either .govt or .ac, meaning they are from government or educational organisations.

BBC History for Kids

This history site belongs to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the world's oldest public broadcasting organisation. The page opens up to a list of British historical events along with ancient civilizations.

Note: Even though the page has a note saying it has been archived, the links still work and the information is reliable and trustworthy.

  • Go to the list of topics and select Ancient History to find the link to Ancient Greece.

  • You will find topics like the Olympic Games, an ancient Greek family, Greek gods and heroes and Greek culture.

Tips: Websites that have .com or .co in the address can have good information, but you need to assess how reliable it is. Check the About the BBC link on the website. That can tell you what the company’s mission and values are.

Ducksters

Ducksters is an easy-to-read website with lots of interesting articles, diagrams and images on history, biography, geography and science.

  • Go to the section on History and look for Ancient Greece under World History.

  • This page has lots to look at under Greek arts and culture, daily life, famous Greek people, Greek mythology and the Olympian Gods.

Tips: Some websites have advertisements (or ads) which ask us to buy something or tell us to ‘click here’. It’s best to ignore these ads and focus on the information we’re looking for.

Books
