Introduction
1080 is a poison that has been used in New Zealand since the 1950s to control the populations of invasive species such as possums, rats, stoats, deer and rabbits. It is a controversial topic because while there is scientific evidence that supports the use of 1080, there are some people that are very firmly against it.
The science of 1080
1080, or sodium fluoroacetate, is the sodium salt form of a toxin that is found in poisonous plants from Western Australia, South America and South Africa.

1080 in New Zealand
1080 is an important tool for pest control in New Zealand. Many of our native birds are endangered species, and pests such as possums and rats kill them and destroy their native habitats. Using 1080 to manage the population of these invasive species is one way to help save our native birds, frogs and lizards.
Department of Conservation (DOC)
The Department of Conservation (DOC for short) is the government website about preserving the natural and historical sites of New Zealand, so it’s going to be a good place to get information about 1080.
Select the Nature tab at the top of the homepage.
Choose Pests and Threats.
Now choose the link to 1080.
Here you will find facts about the fake news hoax that went viral and the scientific studies that disprove the hoax.

Environmental Protection Authority
This is the government agency that is responsible for activities that affect New Zealand's environment, which includes the use of 1080 in conservation.

Australia New Zealand Reference Centre Plus
This is one of the EPIC databases. EPIC is a collection of reliable databases covering lots of different topics. It’s put together especially for New Zealand school students and helps to answer questions like this.
