Introduction

European history between about 500 and 1500 AD is known as the Middle Ages or Medieval period. People think of the Middle Ages as a time of knights and castles. Great changes happened throughout Europe during the Middle Ages especially in weapons technology and political structures. The early part of the Middle Ages is known as the Dark Ages.

Britannica School

This online version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica is a reliable website with great information on the Middle Ages.

  • Choose a level like Primary (you can always change the level later, if you need to).

  • Enter your keywords 'Middle Ages' into the search bar.

  • Choose Middle Ages (CE 500-1500).

This site has easy to read articles, diagrams and images on history, biography, geography, science and sport.

  • Go to History.

  • Then choose Middle Ages.

  • This has a list of different topics about the Middle Ages eg Culture and Major Events like The Black Death.

  • Continue looking down this page to find an introduction and a timeline of dates.

BBC Bitesize - KS3

This site has articles that have been designed especially for school students. This section is for pupils around 11-14. It has information about the Middle Ages.

  • Look through the subjects for History.

  • Find the heading Medieval England and the wider world 1066-1509 and choose a topic.

  • For example, Medieval society, life and religion has information about what life was like in medieval society.

  • If the video's won't play, you can find a transcript underneath.

Khan Academy

A free-to-use site filled with videos and articles on lots of topics, including the Middle Ages.

The British library focuses on English history and literature from the Middle Ages till recent times with primary sources in a digitised format.
